Mr P, The Surgeon

The following was adapted from a real life medical forensics case.

The intention of this simplified case explores the murderer’s INTENT i.e. the mens rea.

Understanding Intent is imperative to any investigations and especially in the Court-of-Law.

The details summarised as follows: -

  1. P family (Husband, Wife, One Son and One Daughter) was the envy of the town.  Mr. P had a successful medical practice and his plastic-surgery was popular (back then).  If there was anything good, it has to be the P family.

  2. The problem was, Mr. P was not a licensed plastic surgeon and he never conducted his surgeries under the assistance of a qualified anaesthetist.  In one of the operations, one patient died from an over-dosage of aesthetics.

  3. The death attracted the attention of the Police and upon in-depth investigations, Mr. P’s potential medical malpractice surfaced.

  4. Not only was he jailed, his medical certification was revoked.

  5. After 3 years, Mr. P was released but he could not find a permanent job.  To make matters worst, he was constantly labelled as. “The Killer”, whenever he drove around town.

  6. Less than one year after his release, his wife and daughter suffered severe ailments and later to be diagnosed as, “lethal dosage of arsenic poisoning”.

  7. Mr. P and his son did not suffer the same effects.

  8. After much investigations, the detectives zero-in to a deliberate act of murder.

  9. Subsequently, Mr. P was suspected and formally charged for intentional poisoning.

  10. Insurance claims were rued out as, there had been no insurance coverage after his prison-release.

What was Mr. P’s motive in the arsenic poisoning?
